A newly funded miner just committed US$75 million for a 19.9% stake in a Mexican copper deal, a West African gold mine poured months ahead of plan, and a Québec project was pegged at $8.8 billion for the provincial economy.

Scroll on for what actually happened.

Quick Takeaways

Short on time? Here is the week in three lines.

  • Goldgroup (TSXV: GORO): Commits US$75 million for about 19.9% of Luca Mining, replacing Trafigura's backstop on the US$290 million Cozamin deal.

  • Montage Gold (TSX: MAU): Poured about 1,140 ounces at Koné months ahead of plan, though shares slipped 2.2% to C$19.45.

  • Falco Resources (TSXV: FPC): A KPMG study puts Horne 5 at $8.8 billion of Québec GDP and about 22,800 jobs in person years, but financing and permits are still open.

The News: Goldgroup Mining (TSXV: GORO; NYSE American: GORO) signed a binding commitment on Sept. 28 to put US$75 million into Luca Mining's US$110 million subscription receipt offering. The money helps fund Luca's US$290 million purchase of the Cozamin Mine in Mexico and would give Goldgroup about 19.9% of Luca and two board seats.

Why It Matters: The commitment replaces the US$75 million backstop Trafigura had provided, and Goldgroup can fund it from roughly US$166 million in cash after a US$121.8 million private placement closed Sept. 25.

Outlook: Closing needs TSX Venture Exchange approval and the Cozamin acquisition's own conditions to be met. Want the full breakdown of the deal? Read our explainer.

The News: Montage Gold (TSX: MAU) poured about 1,140 ounces of gold on Sept. 26 at its Koné mine in Côte d'Ivoire, well ahead of the second quarter 2027 date originally planned. Construction began in December 2024.

Why It Matters: Koné is designed for a 16 year mine life and more than 300,000 ounces a year over its first eight years, and BMO called the pour a major de risking event. Even so, shares were down 2.2% to C$19.45 on Monday morning, for a market value of about C$7.8 billion.

Outlook: The oxide circuit is expected to reach commercial production by year end, and the hard rock circuit is on track for completion by mid 2027.

The News: Falco Resources (TSXV: FPC) released a KPMG study estimating its Horne 5 Project in Rouyn Noranda would add $8.8 billion to Québec's GDP over its life and support about 22,800 jobs in person years. KPMG says 82% of the value added would go to the Abitibi Témiscamingue region.

Why It Matters: The study builds on the July 27 feasibility study and about $12.1 billion of spending over 15 years, so it supports the case for permitting and public backing but is not a financing or a permit.

Outlook: Watch for project financing, permits and the financial assurances owed to Glencore before dewatering and mining can begin.
